Powerbook Medic 10 years ago	@tim - if you've forgotten your passcode, you'll need to connect it to the computer it was setup on. If that is not available, your only option is to put the device in recovery mode and restore it to factory defaults.

John 11 years ago	My neighbor gave me his iphone 3g 16GB after he attempted to erase the personal data on it. Now the screen only shows the white Apple logo and it cannot go into any screen- no response from buttons nor will it turn off. What happened to it and is it fixable?

Powerbook Medic 11 years ago	@Carlo - typically it'll show some sign of life if you just plug it into your computer such as a low battery warning, so if it's nothing at all it may be the logic board.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Daniel - most likely the cable came unplugged while putting it back together or it got torn. You'll just have to go back in and inspect the cable and connectors to see what needs to be reseated or replaced.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@me - I would double check you have all the settings right on the router and the correct security key if one exists. Otherwise, it is probably a logic board issue.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@paige - I would recheck all your connections inside, especially the battery. If everything seems fine, hook it up to your computer and see if it syncs up.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@G Smith - now that's a weird problem. We've never seen that. The cheapest guess that I'd try first is a possible short in the mute switch? so try that first.. after that logic board. We wouldn't mind seeing that one in shop to diagnose if you can't figure it out.
G. Smith 12 years ago	Thank you very much for your prompt reply. However I should have added that this only happens when the ringer is turned on. If I turn the ringer off the display doesn't cycle on and off. But what good is a phone with the ringer off?
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@G. Smith - I would try booting it into DFU mode and see if it'll stay on and if so I'd restore it in iTunes. If not, it may be a bad battery or worst case a logic board.
G. Smith 12 years ago	First of all I found that this is the best fixit site on the net. Very prompt with orders too. However I have a problem with my Iphone 3g. The display only cycles on and off. off for 14secs and on for 5secs. Any one have any suggestions?
dave 12 years ago	If ur iphone wont turn on. Press and hold the sleep and welcome button while its charging till it goes off. Unplug power cord from phone then hold the sleep button while plugging it back in. Keep holding it until it shows a picture of it connecting to iTunes. Going to iTunes and click restore mode. Everstar your phone your previous state and to work after that
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@ruben - it is most likely the LCD or the LCD got unplugged inside, so you'll probably want to open it up first and see if its an easy fix.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Muhammad - there are several possibilities. It could be the screen, logic board, or battery. If nothing at all is coming on the screen and it is not being seen by your computer, it is probably the logic board. You may want to send it to us or take it somewhere to be professionally diagnosed.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@vasco - try holding it right next to the wireless router and see if it detects it. If it does, you probably have an antenna issue causing a very weak signal, otherwise it is probably the logic board due to some defect in the wireless hardware.
vasco 12 years ago	i have also reset my network settings on the iphone and had left my wireless network without any password for connection so it can be easily coonected...my other devices are easily able to connect my network except for my iphone

Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@jarz - you need to eject the tray and put the card inside the tray. there should be a small hole in the tray that you need to insert a tool or paperclip to get it to pop open.

Jen C 13 years ago	Not seen elsewhere or here: there are five different screws used in the 3G. I recently restored one-such, and had an 'unknown error' when trying to connect to iTunes after re-assembly. 2nd tear down and looked carefully at everything to discover FIVE different but similar looking screws. An ex-radio-tech, I sorted which ones should go where, re-assembled, and it worked perfectly. Obviously a wrong length screw was shorting something out somewhere. Suggestion. Before taking apart: draw a rough sketch of each layer, and place each removed screw onto some sort of sticky stuff (bluetack?) on the sketch to reflect it's position in the phone. May be able to upload some example photos taken, but given this 70 year-old brain I wouldn't count on it :)
Jen C 13 years ago	Once again a great service, appreciated. A suggestion re the lower speaker and mic grills: I eBought an old 3G which was very dirty - it had worked hard - and the grills were almost totally blocked. No compressed air at hand, but do have some Japanese Kao brand clothes washing detergent called 'BioZet Attack'. It is a superb cleaned, when give time (it will remove 10 year old acrylic paint!). Very effective. Remove the phone screen, logic board and lower mic/antenna/connector block (3 screws). In a suitable sixed squareish container add enough water to cover the grills, and and a small pinch of the detrgent powder. Let disolve, then carefully stand the grill portion of the phone in the mix. Leave for a couple of days. Check with a jeweler's loupe (about 10x) to see if the laser-cut micro holes are clear. When they are clear, carefully rinse and dry, then reassemble. Your calls quality will be dramaically clearer! Now I'm off to try the DFU suggestion. Thanks again.
Joshua 13 years ago	At around 3:45, this asks you to lift the LCD from the digitizer mechanism. I did this, and damaged the LCD from attempting to remove it exactly where it shows. I would strongly recommend to gently pry it from the sides where you removed the screws to lift it at first, that was the tool you use to pry it with will be kept from touching the actual screen.
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@bill - typically the display will still work with a cracked display. the lcd may have had more severe damage. also if you see any corrosion around where the LCD connects, the logic board could still be bad. not much you can do at this point besides trying a new LCD.
bill 13 years ago	a friend got a a1421 from a flea market as is and when got back and connected to charger, got nothing on screen. i disassembled per video and found some corrosion around batt terminal and minor sighns of water damage and a cracked lcd. when i cleaned and dried in rice and reassembled still nothing on screen but computer recognized the device and installled drivers and will even browse the pictures on the phone memory.. no sim in it or with a valid att sim with sp data package. what would u suggest i try? will a crack in lcd prevent from starting ? and does it sound like the logic board is ok since computer recognized and communicated with it

chad 13 years ago	My iphone works great. only problem i have is wifi. it connects to 3g network, but wont connect/find to any wifi connections. just says finding wifi connections... then stops looking. i replaced the wifi on it. and still doesnt work. so that means its a logic board problem? please reply as soon as u can :(

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@feddry - so the headset speaker works but then stops? that's fairly weird. I would try all of the software possibilities first. Turn the phone completely off and back on and see if it does it. Then restore the phone in iTunes. If that doesn't fix it, it may be the speaker itself, but it is more likely the logic board has a short.

I guess at this point if its completely working you could either keep it like you said or sell it for some decent money. People like the out of contract iPhones.
shomen 14 years ago	Now tell you what? After arranged a new replacement Iphone4(A1332) the A1241 started to show a flash symbol on screen again when pressing the front-button. The battery must have been completely empty that is clear. Plugged it into the charger and the thing started to charge up again. We have to be aware that it could not connect to the 3G network anymore since the number was transferred to new handset. Is there any hack possible over the 3G network we were not aware of that could have caused it to crash and drain the battery completely? Will use it as a Wifi IPOD now as long as it wants to work ;)
shomen 14 years ago	btw, just for the record it was in the pocket of my blouse in stand by. Suddenly I fellt something hot there took the phone out and noticed that the display was on to let me unlock it but not responding to anything.. then it blacked out, died I guess...maybe CPU? Understand from your answer that even with a dead battery there should be some sign when connecting external power to it, right? thanks for the advise anyway.
Shomen 14 years ago	No there is no life in it anymore when plugging it in on the PC or in the normal Apple charger. However an external battery unit lights its blue LED up meaning it is charging but still no life in the handset. This looks like more severe trouble?
Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Shomen - you'd really have to open it to see. Typically it will still show something on the screen when you plug it up even if it is the please charge symbol.

Is it likely that the chemistry in the Li-Ion battery was doing strange close the dangerous temperature level and then the build-in safety switch disconnected they failing battery? this could be repaired by just changing the battery or something else could be damaged? cheers!
Brendan 14 years ago	hi my iphone 3gs has been playing up for a while it wont connect to wifi when i want it to it says there is no wifi present when i know there is and my 3g network doesn't work properly either i am with optus and was in sydney now i have moved to a remote country area and the reception is dodgy as my my friend with the same iphone with optus as perfect reception is there sonmething i can buy to have this fixed!

Maria 14 years ago	Damn damn damn, it was working fine, but still had cloudy screen, so took screen apart, now i have damaged the LCD display, and it turns on and its all white, i can hear texts coming in and phone ringinf but display is just white? how much is a new lcd? or prior to that any ideas? Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Maria - it is really hard to say. With liquid damage, it really depends how much it had a chance to damage and how much is corroded inside. You can open it up and take a look around for corrosion or send it off to us or take it somewhere locally to diagnose.

cindy 14 years ago	Thanks for the video, dropped lotion on the screen and it got into the speaker,now I' cant hear unless it is on speaker is on, unfortunately this did not help because that portion of the speaker inside is covered with metal, I did however manage to break my screen while prying it off, just a little, so maybe it will be okay, now putting it back together will be the task...

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@jordan - with water damage, it is really difficult to see the extent of the damage without opening it up. most likely your logic board is toast and it isn't repairable.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Maressa - Try googling DFU mode. Try getting into that mode and then syncing it up to the computer and see if it'll let you restore. If not, your phone most likely is not feasibly repairable.
Maressa 14 years ago	I got water in mine and didnt realize it for a while so did not get to start trying to fix until a few hrs later... i opened it up to dry and i also tryed the bag of rice trick... it wants me to restore but when i try itunes says and unknown error has occured and it cannot restore... do you know how i could fix this???
Tony Q 14 years ago	Thanks for this great video, had a mate that dropped his phone in sink, took it apart as instructed by this video and placed in sauna to dry, put back together and works perfectly.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Joe - You most likely have a problem with your digitizer. It could be partially unplugged inside or damaged and in need of replacement. We sell it on our site.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@ LauraB - The first thing I'd try is to restore the iPhone to the original settings in iTunes and see if the issue resolves itself. That will tell you if it is a hardware or software issue.
LauraB 14 years ago	my iphone 3G will NOT ring!! if you go to the settings everything is correct and if you test the ring it does ring then..but NOT when rcving incoming calls...???? any ideas?

bryan clarke 14 years ago	ok so i have just recently repaired my iphone 3g. I had to replace the digitizer and the internal earpiece. the digitizer works great but still no sound out of the earpiece. My question is... when replacing the earpiece assembly the prongs on the back... are they positive and negative? the are not marked so im thinking I may have installed it backwards... Does any one know about this repair?? I cant find anything out there on it.

Jimmy 15 years ago	Word of advice...when trying to remove the cracked the glass from the frame by heating it up to melt the glue...BE CAREFUL not to overheat the HOME button...I warped mine and had to then rig it up for it to function properly. All the videos out there and not one mentioned this.

Jimmy 15 years ago	DO NOT...I repeat..DO NOT use flathead to lift lcd from assembly...just use fingernails or something thin to wedge open the side tabs and lift up the lcd gently with plastic pry tool (or with finger). Should come right out.
Jimmy 15 years ago	Cable 3 sucks big toe to put back in and to make it stay when trying to connect cable 2 back on (even if the little tab is pressed back down on it).

damn 15 years ago	couldn't you have at least mentioned that if you press too hard while removing the screen the LCD ink will crack and leak causing damage to your screen?

Powerbook Medic 15 years ago	If it doesn't work after it has dried out, then it likely needs to have the logic board replaced. However, generally with water damage, multiple parts can fail inside the unit, so it may just need to be replaced.
