bubmario 9 years ago	Does anyone have a guide/video on fixing the Camera/iSight Cable inside of the Macbook Pro 15'' Early 2011 (model A1286)? I replaced the Bluetooth board to get Handoff working, but I think I broke/disconnected the camera cable in the process

Powerbook Medic 10 years ago	@chris - we don't really provide support on component level logic board repair. That issue is usually a problem with the top case with the reed switch near the trackpad.
chris 10 years ago	I am beginning the process of repairing the fault in the logic board that causes the mbp to sleep randomly, could you list tools, equipment and or parts that will be needed to perform the repair
Powerbook Medic 10 years ago	@Carmela - sometimes you can get lucky with a magnet getting it out, but the proper way is removing the logic board.

Carmela 10 years ago	Thanks, all the videos were most helpful and I was able to successfully swap out the LCD screen on my Mac Book Pro. I did make one little minor booboo though. I accidentally put one of the Top Case Screws into the screw hole for the DVI port. Any ideas on how to get it out?

Powerbook Medic 10 years ago	@Gary - technically you can, but they typically only come with the top case, and installing a previously removed one generally won't go back on very well.

Powerbook Medic 11 years ago	@Jenni - it is most likely an issue with the logic board overheating or the graphics chip itself. you may want to check if your fans are working properly and possibly reapply some thermal paste onto the logic board. otherwise, the logic board may need to be repaired or replaced.

Jenni 11 years ago	My computer randomly becomes very pixelated and the screen turns partially green and freezes. Sometimes when I restart after this the apple logo is also pixelated and green. Appears to be frozen but I hear my email login if I wait even though I can only see the loading screen. Also overheats very easily. Any idea what this might be? Thank you.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Miguel - If it has a charged battery and won't turn on while plugged in, it'll be the logic board. If the battery is dead and there is no light on the plug, it may be just the magsafe or power adapter itself.

Jerry 12 years ago	Looks like the backlight is dying, when screen turns any shade of red, its a sign that the backlight is dying, that is if you have the LCD and not the LED

Charles 12 years ago	By looking hard, I noticed there seem to be different problems on the display : It is all pink with vertical lines (one line of pixels of two) There is also an intermittent problem with the light of the screen (at the bottom end of the screen, I can see that one "stripe of light" (approximately 3 cm wide) on two is sometimes not working). any idea ????
Charles 12 years ago	I opened the MBP. All cables seem to be ok... Can we be absolutely certain it is not a problem of the logic board ? (bad video information sent to display) If yes, I will get a complete display for my MBP.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Charles - it can be the LCD, the display cable, or the connection on the logic board. If the issue changes depending on the angle of the display it is more likely to be the cable.

bena 12 years ago	hi medic just got a macbook pro A1226 model just today in campus i downloaded mozila fire fox for mac.i installed it well i even managed to configure internet settings on it .problem is after i shut it down on turning it on the display doesnt come on although the lights on the keyboard and on the charger comeon..kindly tell me if its my 15inch lcd display is badd or wat and how much it costs in ur shop
Cathy 12 years ago	I have a Macbook Pro a1226, 15 inch. I opened my laptop one day to find the bottom third of my screen fully blurred as tho smeared vertically. I can bring the view back to normal if I squeeze just right in the lower right part of the screen/lid (also get other weirdnesses if I don't press just right), so I'm guessing it's a bad or loose connection. Is there a way to repair this without buying a new screen? Thanks so much for any advice.
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Mike - it can still be the backlight itself which would require a new LCD, or it can be the magsafe board on these models which power the backlight.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Calvin - you usually look at the light on the adapter. If it is a known working adapter and it doesn't light up, it is usually the magsafe. If it is red (not amber), it is typically the logic board.

Richard 12 years ago	Can the top lcd cover be removed without a lot of dismantling. My case is showing wear and was considering get a repaint as there does not seem to be any clip on cases for the A1226

stephane 12 years ago	Hi sergio Your connection could be loose. I have replace an led today and turn it on and it lit up for a split of a second and shut down. I then did a control - command - power button hold for more than five seconds for your system to shut down. I open it again and really made sure that the monitor was connected properly without being loose ( use two tweesers for that) and voila it turned on without a problem.

After looking at how my current cable is installed it doesn't seem too difficult, however there are some places where some tape must be removed in order to disconnect the wire completely.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Sergio - that typically means you have some setting that is incompatible, such as a strange resolution. I'd first try resetting the PRAM by holding down Apple-Option-P-R during boot until it reboots itself.
Sergio 12 years ago	Hello, I bought you an LED display and received yesterday, replaced it and when the system is booting, the screen turns on and you see the apple, but when you lift the operating system, the screen turns off and the system does not recognize it. .. How I can fix this?
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Kevin - it is usually caused by a short.. it could be a screw out of place or a bare wire rubbing up against the chassis.
Kevin 12 years ago	Everything seems to have settled down without me having to take it all back apart. Is it possible I didn't have some of the wiring back in its little track, etc. and it was touching something it wasn't supposed to? The other odd thing is that the light sensor(s) seem to have stopped working as well, even though I never had them out of the computer. I don't WANT to take it all apart again (or rock the boat if it's working ok)...

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Kevin - yeah that typically happens if you switch around some screws. It can also happen if there is something metallic (like a missing screw) underneath one of the boards that is causing a short. All you can really do in this case is take it all apart and start from scratch and check everything.
Kevin 12 years ago	Ok, so on a whim I opened the top case and tried all the critical connections again, taking time to remove and examine the video connection, which looks in perfect condition. When I put MOST of the top case back on, minus the two T6 screws neat the RAM cards, the 00philips screw on the back left by the magsafe card, the two 00philips screws inside the battery bay by the latch, and the RAM cover, all worked fine, I was able to reboot, etc...yay! But when I put all those other things back in (oh, the battery was out too for this), including the battery, I again have no screen. So I took all those things back out again, and sometimes I can boot, other times I get screechy, scratchy sounds from the speakers and it will hang at the "Omm" startup sound, over and over and over...I am guessing maybe something around the area of the magsafe card is loose now? It was suggested I might have some longer screws where shorter ones go, etc., but I was very careful to pull all back where they belong...
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Kevin - sorry, we are closed on the weekend. First check if the machine is actually booting up. Easy test is to see if you can hear the volume adjusting once you think its had time to boot up. Then I would check and make sure the backlight is just not working. If you look real close, you may be able to make out an image. If you can, check your inverter board connections, otherwise you most likely shorted out your logic board. You can send it to us for a free diagnosis if you like.

Kevin 12 years ago	I just replaced the bottom case on my 2006 MBP (model A1211). I previously replaced the top case, optical, and disk drives and all has been running as good as new for months. I used the instructions on to replace the bottom case, following the instructions exactly. Now when I go to turn the computer on, the screen doesn't turn on. I thought maybe a connection or screw was loose, so I disconnected and reconnected everything. All connections are tight, no screws are loose or missing. What am I missing??

Chris 12 years ago	I'm trying to repair a friend's A1226 macbook pro. The LCD backlight comes on when powered up but there is no display, and it appears to not boot all the way up (no keyboard lighting, no light on front). When I plug in an external monitor, I get a background image (but no desktop), and the computer appears to finish booting (keyboard backlit, front light on). After reading around the web and watching your videos, I replaced the video cable but there is no change. Any thoughts?

John 12 years ago	I have an MBP 2007 (A1226) that does not want to go into sleep mode. Guess I need to replace the sleep sensor? I also noticed it latches not well and therefore closes with difficulty. Cheers

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Stanc - vertical lines are typically an issue with the video chipset. Given the new issue, most likely your logic board went bad. I'd advise getting it professionally diagnosed at this point.
Stanc 12 years ago	My MBP won't start when I press the power button; just all of a sudden, a few days ago, it would not start. I've been having display problems for several weeks, with a vertical striation throughout the display; sometimes going white opaque, sometimes red or green or blue opaque; no, it won't power on. What could be the problem?
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Ron - it sounds like either a defective panel or it is defaulting to an unsupported resolution.. so when it gets to the OS where it changes to the higher resolution it goes black. Typically you would adjust it with a pram reset or from an external but it looks like you've tried that, so it is probably a bad panel.
Ron H 12 years ago	@Powerbook Medic: Have a MBP A1226 that I just replaced the screen on. Both screens are the N154C6-L01 screen. The original is glossy, the replacement is matte. When I power the unit on, the screen comes on fine, I get the Apple and spinning gear. As soon as the machine boots OSX (10.6.8 w/SMC and EFI update) the screen goes black. I get picture on an external display, and it says that there's no screen detected. Any ideas what else I can try here? I've booted it from a good external os, I've reset PRAM and SMC, tried different RAM, different magsafe board, and even tried safe mode with no luck.
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Peder - three main things can go wrong with a screen.. the screen itself, the cable, or the video chipset on the main logic board. You can try an external monitor and see if the same thing happens as that can help rule out the logic board. If it is a cable issue, it would typically get better or worse depending on the angle of the display since the cable may be getting pinched in the hinges.
Peder 12 years ago	I have a problem with the screen of my MBP.The solution of the csreen turns very poor and you can hardly reed the screen. Took it to a local Mac workshop and they tell me the screen is broken and has to be changed. The problem is that it changes all the time, and now it has been good for 2-3 weeks. Only bad for a few minutes to - three times. I do not think it is the screen. Any suggestions?
Jerry 12 years ago	My MBP 15" from '08 is blinking out to grey at the bottom half of the screen. If I place a small clamp on the bezel edge right side, about two inches from the bottom, the screen will go back to normal. Is see that the video cable is about parallel with the clamp. Could it just be loose or maybe something more serious?

Adam 12 years ago	Hi there: I have two macbook pro a1226's. Issues are: Mac #1: Trackpad/keypad is dead. just stopped working. Also randomly re-boots the Mac particularly when watching video streaming in Google Chrome or using Logic 8. Mac#2: Isight no longer operates/activates. Would like to also replace bottom case as it has been bent. Let me know what I will need to get.

Tim R 12 years ago	I have a problem with the display of my MBP 2.4GZ. I hear the startup sound but no display. The display now only turns on when you have a dvi cable attached to it. The first time, it was out of commission for a week until I tried to plug in another display, what must I do to fix the problem? it has only happened 3x's.
Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@Art - once you get the top case off, it is pretty easy to take out the keyboard. Just peel off the black adhesive covers and unscrew all of the screws under the keyboard.

Powerbook Medic 12 years ago	@steve - on these models, it can possibly be the magsafe board since these use LED displays and all of that is powered directly by the magsafe board. I would try that first, then it'll be the logic board after that.
Steve 12 years ago	I have a question about a repair for a macbook pro A1226. I w as having problems with my LCD (video would go in and out) and it finally stopped video altogether. I took it to Apple and was told the LCD probably needed replaced. I did the repair myself but still had no video. I replaced the cable and the inverter but still no video. The video does work with an external monitor plugged in so I guess the logic board is fine. Any ideas as to what could be wrong?

John 13 years ago	I just bought a top case flex cable from you at Powerbook Medic (my keyboard and trackpad are not working, but a usb keyboard and mouse work). I was going to pay a local repair shop to fit this new cable, but watching your video I think I could maybe do it myself. At the end of the vid, you disconnect the cable from the logic board. Looks easy. Is it as simple to remove the end connected to the top case? If I could do this myself, I'll save £60 here in the UK.

Jeremy 13 years ago	I have recently purchased from powerbook medic and replaced my LED screen in my MBP M1226. I can tell the display is working when I am in a bright light but the back light on the display is not working. I took it to the genius bar today in hopes of finding out the cause or at least a direction to look in and they said there is not much they could do because I have opened it and already replaced things with non-factory parts. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
Nathan 13 years ago	@Powerbook Medic I decided to take my computer apart myself to replicate what the first computer guy did and at first it didn't work. Later on in the evening though I did try it again and it worked. I still need to see if it continues to start up normally but I am really happy to be on my computer again!!

Nathan 13 years ago	I have this Macbook Pro and I have had a problem that my screen does not show anything at all when I start up. I took it to a computer store and each time that he took the computer apart it would start up normally once. After shutting it down again the same problem arises. I also took it to an apple approved store and they said I had to send it in to apple and have the screen replaced for $500. I would like to find a cheaper solution if I can. If anyone has a similar story I would appreciate the help. Thanks.
Robert 13 years ago	I replaced the LCD display in my 15" MacBook pro A- 1226. PowerbookMedic not only had the part they also helped me over the phone when I was doing the installation of this part. My only sugestion is that they show in the video the plugs on the wires how the are to be removed. I think a sticker on the protective film on the Screen would alert the installer to remove it when it is no longer needed. Oh the computer works like new after I have, with your help, repaired it. Thank you for a great service.

Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Mike - I'm fairly sure that error code is indeed an issue with a temperature sensor so it is falsely reporting the speed and causing the fans to go faster than normal to help protect the machine. I'm not sure which sensor it is exactly, but the sensors are generally the same part so you could order one from our site and test it one at a time in each connection and see if the issue goes away.

Mike 13 years ago	Hi PM, Having a weird combo of issues with my 2009 2.53 core 2 duo 15" MBP. A few weeks ago I would turn the backlight off while processes were running in my room while I slept and it would randomly turn back on. Then, this week I noticed my adapter was not charging (the lights were not working and it would only work when I moved the adapter). The fan also started staying on and revving at 5700+ rpms no matter what the temperature and load of the processor. I ran the hardware test and got back an error : 4SNS/1/40000000: 'TmOP' Further investigation shows that the thermal paste is dried up on both processors (video and core) but not much else. Any ideas? Thanks so much. Mike
Nathan Reeves 13 years ago	I had an A1226 MBP that had the NVIDIA chip problem Apple replaced it for me free of charge. Make sure you have the NVIDIA chip logic board and call APple Customer Relations NOT Customer Service. I got it repaired but not my top assembly is acting wonky another known issue with these units! OUCH! Good luck with all your repairs!

Is it essential, or can I remove the other screws and still take the top case off to access the inside of the machine to replace the hard drive?

Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@jason - that is typically going to be either a RAM or overheating problem. You may want to make sure your fans are working and clean them out. Worst case scenario is the logic board going bad.
jason 13 years ago	About a week ago I started having an issue with my macbook pro 1211 when running many different programs at the same time would lock up the machine. one of the programs i run is parellels desktop 5. I had to hold down the power button to turn the machine off. then i would reboot it and everything is fine, until yesterday it did it again. but this time when i rebooted the machine the screen didn't come on. i heard the start up sound but no screen. so i took the battery out and unpluged it over night this morning i put the battern back in and pluged it in and everything worked fine but i was listening to ITunes and working in excel in the VM and the machine locked up again. and now the same issue screen won't turn on. I even tried pluging in an external monitor but it wasn't getting a signal. HELP

Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Ricardo - i would check the light on the magsafe power plug first. If it doesn't light up, I'd try the magsafe board first. If it lights up, it is probably the main logic board.
Ricardo 13 years ago	Hi, powerbook medic, my macbook fell from about 3ft and it doesn't power on at all, not even the white light in the opening release button, i opened it, but the board seems ok, it's not broken or anything, is it possible to fix it? what could be wrong, because replacing the hole board, its really expensive.
John 13 years ago	I replaced the LCD on an A1226. It comes on upon start-up, but then goes dark. If i hook up my second display, the computer is working, but "detect displays" does not reveal the display on the computer. ??

Mike 13 years ago	When I replaced my hard drive, I used a program called SuperDuper! to create a backup image of the hard drive that was bootable on USB. I removed the old hard drive, put in a new one, rebooted off of the USB, and used SuperDuper! again to restore the new drive with the image that was on the previous drive. Very easy. Of course, it helps to have a spare USB drive around for backups.
Dave 13 years ago	I appreciate your 'do it yourself' hard drive install but what about the operating software? My original OS was a 10.4 and upgraded to 10.6 through a local Apple repair facility. That said, I don't have the disc to reinstall. Am I committed to paying for the OS once again or can it be reinstalled any other way?

Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Dennis - yea i'd say the superdrive should be replaced. I can't think of any major firmware upgrades in newer versions of OS X that would fix that kind of issue.
Dennis 13 years ago	Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I know that DVD-Rs are the preferred discs, but I still have the problem, even using them. I get the error code "0x8002006E" when attempting a burn using a burn folder. In Disk Utility, I receive the message "Unable to burn - The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." Would these error messages indicate a failed SuperDrive? I am still using Mac OS X Tiger, but will soon be upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Would the older operating system play any role in the SuperDrive problem?
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Dennis - most likely. I believe - (minus) R blank dvds are more compatible than +R, but its probably a superdrive problem.
Dennis 13 years ago	I have a MacBook Pro 15" Intel Core Duo 2.16GHz. I am having problems with the SuperDrive. Some DVDs and CDs will not run, but some do. I can sometimes burn discs using a burn folder, but often cannot. Although I have used disk utility to burn some discs, it is now failing. The drive is a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857. Do I need to simply replace the drive? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Justin - it really depends what codec you are using, how much RAM you have, and how big the files are. Your machine should be fine handling 1080p stuff. If it is a graphics problem however, about all you could do is max out the RAM, maybe switch to a faster hard drive, or buy a new computer.
Justin 13 years ago	Hello Powerbook Medic. I currently use a 4 year old 15-inch MacBook Pro, model A1226 with a 2.2GHz processor. I have an issue with my display. It lags a lot when I playback video, which I need because I use it to edit film projects for school. My main concern is that the graphics card might be getting old and worn out. Either that or the display is wearing out. My fear is that I might have to purchase a new MacBook Pro, but I don't have the kind of money for that now. Is there any way to help restore the graphics on it?
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Mohan - that issue can be either the LCD or the display cable, so thats the next thing I'd try. The worst case scenario would be a damaged display connection on the logic board which is rare unless the machine was opened up previously.
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@jc - you really have to be a professional to remove and reinstall the individual chips on the board. It is best to buy a replacement board or send it off to a professional to have repaired with the right tools and a clean room.
Mohan C. Siribaddana 13 years ago	Hi Powermedic My Apple Macbook Pro (A1226) LCD screen intermittently flicker (horizontal lines and the color of the LCD changes). When I connect it to the external monitor, the picture perfect. Our local Mac service provider said that the LCD screen is defective, then the new original LCD screen was fixed. After replacing the LCD, the problem still exist, In other words, the LCD flickers with different colors and horizontal lines. Kindly advise me as to how I should overcome this problem. Where is the problem lies on the computer.

Danny 13 years ago	I have a MBP A1226 and the sound stopped working. Their is no chime on boot up. The volume is greyed out and the volume on the keyboard does not work also. Looks like my MBP just does not see the sound card installed. Do I need to replace the motherboard?

There are several revisions of LCDs though, so you may want to contact our support department and see what they can do for you. If you have your original LCD brand and model number, that could help.

The new LCD is not enought bright (almost the half as the original one, in the maxiumum) and the contrast is very poor too. So If I replace the magsafe board and the LCD still won't light up then I should buy the LCD? Because the magsafe board is a lot cheaper and I could still sell it assuming that is not the part I need than going for the LCD right away and turn up that only the magsafe board is busted.
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Mcgeav - a backlight issue on your model is typically the LCD, but its not a guarantee. The magsafe board is responsible for the power to the backlight, so that is a common cause as well.
Mcgeav 13 years ago	I have a 1211 macbook pro. my screen is dark, I could see whats on the screen if i flash a light on it and the laptop works connected to an external monitor. I sent it to a local mac center and they told me it is a backlight problem and would cost me about $390 for repairs. If I oder just the lcd from you would that fix it?
Powerbook Medic 13 years ago	@Jeff - typically when the magsafe still turns green but it won't turn on means either the wrong wattage power adapter is being used or there is an issue with the logic board or RAM.
Jeff 13 years ago	My 2006 macbook recently wouldn't charge. The magsafe connector in the computer was worn out, I had to jiggle the corad around and get it in just the right spot to charge, after a few months of this it completely quit. I replaced the magsafe board and double checked that they were the same model number. After re-assembly the charger will turn green, but not orange. I can't get the computer to power on, what should I check?

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@junior - this model closes by a hook in the display that latches to a magnet in the bottom case. If yours is not latching, close it slowly and see if the hook is swinging out and is not getting stuck. If the hook is fine, you'll have to replace the bottom case.

And now it is crushes totally. Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Chris - I would first try to take out the hard drive and see what happens. Also make sure no cd is in the superdrive. If you disconnect the hard drive and superdrive, and it still does the same thing, it is probably the logic board. You may also want to check the sleep light. If it is blinking, it can be a memory chip issue.
Chris 14 years ago	I have a problem with my A1226 (mid 2007 version).It is not starting any more.When i turn it on the screen is black and i just here a repetetive dong. no apple sign, nothing.It just tries repetetivly to access the superdrive. John 14 years ago	MB Pro 2.2Ghz 15" A1226 with screen issues (LED). Have a backlite issue in that screen still works very faintly, guessing not logic board or power due to everything works fine with external monitor. That leaves screen, inverter or cables? I would have guessed the inverter had it been a CCFL, but its LED backlit. Thoughts?
Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Jennie - you'll just want to recheck your connections on the back of the LCD and in the isight module. You'll also want to be sure the cables are not getting pinched in the hinges. It can be tricky to route these cables properly.
Jennie Larkins 14 years ago	I had to replace the case frame of my MB Pro and removed the LCD. After replacing the bezel and frame, the camera does not work and the screen is not very clear but readable. What can be done to fix this?
Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Karl - that would be a kernel panic. There are several possibilities for one including a corrupt OS, bad RAM, a defective component, or a bad logic board. Based on the rest of your description, it does sound like a GPU problem. We do offer a logic board repair service or you can replace the board.
Karl 14 years ago	After switchin on my MacBook Pro 1226 the screen comes up in white color, the apple sign appears shortly, butno very clear. After 5 seconds a message appears that I whould the MacBook off and start it anew. I suppose that the graphic chip has a problem. Anybody else has an idea how to solve the problem?

C 14 years ago	Stupid Question of the Day: One of the bottom feet fell out, so I ordered a replacement set. Despite me gently tapping in place with a rubber mallet, the foot won't stay in place. And now another foot has fallen off. Am I missing something obvious here? It's hard to get these to snap in (if that is what's supposed to happen). Thanks!

Blake 14 years ago	I have a MBP A1226 and just replaced my lcd today with one I bought from you guys yesterday. The problem is that it really seems to me that it's the wrong part. My screen flickers and buzzes whenever brightness isn't all the way up, and the colors on the dark end of the spectrum are totally off (bright blue instead of black). I went back in and checked the tightness on all the plugs, but it didn't help. Ideas? Or was the part your site recommends (SKU 86073) not actually correct?
Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Wolfinstein - not really, make sure you do try doing a PRAM reset to see if that fixes anything. A PRAM reset will reset all of the basic hardware settings but won't touch anything on your computer. You can do this by holding down Apple-Option-P-R as soon as you power on the computer until it restarts itself.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Wolfinstein - if you still have the original cracked LCD and it was at least partially viewable, I would try reinstalling that to see if the snowed out issue remains. If it does, it'll be an issue with your cabling, if not it may be a defective new LCD.
Wolfinstein 14 years ago	Thank you guys for your support. I recently replaced a cracked LCD on my 15"MBP with a new LCD I got from you. Unfortunately, the screen is "snowed out" to the point that the images are barely visible. In addition to the constant “snowed out” condition, the display flickers from intermittently. I followed the video for replacement explicitly, except I used some electrical tape instead of the pink anti-static tape to hold the cables in place. Can this be the problem or is it something else.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Bruce - I believe the speaker is part of the left speaker assembly. You can pop off the top case and check it or if you think you may have spilled something in that left side grill, it could have shorted it out.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Graeme - it may be a hardware issue such as a problem with the RAM, but you may want to try resetting the PRAM. Do this by shutting down the machine, unplug it, take out the battery, then hold down the power button for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

John 14 years ago	My 2008 MacBook Pro has a fan with a really loud whine on the right side. Sometimes, if I tap it, it will go away, and it even went away for a couple of weeks, but now it's back and as annoying as ever. I can't work in a cubicle with this noise, because it bothers everyone else.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Carl - that is usually just a software problem. Just boot up from your install cd and repair disk permissions on your hard drive using Disk Utility. If it doesn't work, it should give you an error that might tell you if you need a new hard drive.

Jane 14 years ago	Hi I have a Macbook Pro 15'' that I bought in '05. it was dropped about 1-2 ft from the ground onto carpet. Has a small dent on the case on the right side about 3-4 from the hinge. A day or so after the dent occurred the backlight of the screen flickered on and off a few times and then it went back to normal. The next day it worked for a while and then the backlight flickered on and off and remained off. The display is slightly visible if you use a strong flashlight. Any ideas?

jen 14 years ago	hi. i have a 15" macbook pro. sadly, my cat split a little bit of water on it while i was asleep. i didn't realize that the water had gotten into the system until it was too late and i started using it. sadly i believe the logic board is fried. is there a specific way to tell this other than, "it won't boot up" ?

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Holly - it is hard to say just based on that. If there is no backlight, no picture it can be the LCD or the logic board or even just a loose cable. They may just be trying to get out of a warranty replacement because of some casing damage. We do offer a free diagnosis service if you want to send it in to us.
Holly Locke 14 years ago	Hi - My daughter has a 2008 15" macbook pro that was having problems recently so we took it to the Mac store and they discovered that the logic board was faulty so the replaced it at no charge and we also had them replace the optical drive that was not working. Now a month later, the computer boots up but no display comes up so we took it in again and now they say it needs a new "Display clamshell" due to pressure marks on the display. We don't want to pay the $732 they quoted and are wondering if we can do this ourselves, or have it done somewhere cheaper, or if we should not invest any more $ and buy a new unit to get my daughter thru high school. Any advice?

Ryan Ploger 14 years ago	I have a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz, with the LCD panel showing an image only about the top 2/3 of the display itself, cutting off the bottom of the screen image. If I give the panel a squeeze at about the 4:30 position and about 2 inches from the edge, the screen goes to full display again. I imagine that an LCD replacement is all that is needed here?

It's not the sound if it trying to read a disc, this is different, softer and continual. It sometimes stops but this is happening less frequently and I fear that it will someday keep going indefinitely. Have you heard of this?

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@gama - I would try to do a reset. turn off the machine, take out the battery, hold the power button down for a good 10 seconds without it plugged in, then plug it in without the battery, and boot it up. if the same thing happens, it is probably the logic board, but could be the magsafe or LCD. I might would have it professionally diagnosed at that point.

Josh 14 years ago	Hey I am having difficulties with my trackpad and keyboard going out. There are times that I spend hours on it and it works fine but others I can't be on it for longer than 2 minutes before it goes out. I can still use the power button and the backlight works. I brought it in to the Genius bar and had someone look at it but they insisted everything was fine. I have the 15" model A1260. I am thinking I will have to replace the top case, if you agree which do I need. The top case flex cable or the full track pad assembly?

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Felix - I would reseat all of the cables relating to the trackpad and top case. After that I would check for any corrosion. If you can't find anything, you'll probably need to replace the top case.

EXCEPT screen is black! About 2 months out from going black screen was progressively going pinker.. no lines just pinker and pinker then BLACK!! Computer is still functional and if i shine a light on the screen you can see the graphics fine!! I have tried resetting the pram (opt+com+p+r) but nothing. Any ideas? If it is the inverter board, where is that located. Would i be better to get a new screen?

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Hank - it can be either, but it is more often the inverter board unless you have had some hinge problems. The inverter board is located in the display below the LCD screen.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Dave - You usually only get that error in Apple Hardware Test in certain machines. It's related to the charging of the battery. If you remove the battery and run the Apple Hardware Test, it likely won't produce the error.

Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Rita - We sell both G and N cards which usually tells you if it has 2 or 3 connections. Is the card being detected at all or is it just no signal?
Rita C. 14 years ago	Hi, I just received the Logic card from you guys. Replaced my old one with it, and fixed my power problem. However, now my Airport Card is not working anymore... I noticed that the Airport card you are selling has only 2 connection (black and blue) whereas mine has 3 connections (black, white, and blue). Could this be the reason why? Maybe my Airport card is not compatible with the new logic board?
Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@ charles w - The Wacom tablet is a USB device. The trackpad and keyboard connect directly to the logic board. You likely need to replace your top case if those components are not working.

Dave 14 years ago	My MBP 15" wont start up. The screen is black, there is no chime and the sleep light glows solid when open. There is power to the usb ports as well. Any ideas??
Powerbook Medic 14 years ago	@Rita - Not really. The power goes through the magsafe board to the power management unit on the logic board to charge the battery, so either could be the culprit. The magsafe board is much cheaper than the logic board.

Alex 15 years ago	I've had my MacBook Pro for about 2.5 years now. The other day I was surfing the internet and the colors on my screen suddenly inverted. Red, dotted pixel lines appeared every half inch or so all the way down my screen and the laptop froze. Since then, when I boot up the computer the lines still appear on the apple loading screen. The system won't actually boot. Whenever I try the screen greys over and a warning pops up telling me to hold down my power button. Also, I took it in to the genius bar and was told that they didn't know what was wrong with it. Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks, Alex
Powerbook Medic 15 years ago	@Alex- Yes that is the keyboard you need. As far as the plastic, it only comes with new top cases. It isn't necessary, but it does help in spills so the liquid can't get to the internals as easy.

After watching your video I ordered the part and watched the video on my ps3 "terrible browser but my mac was in pieces. Alex 15 years ago	Hi PM :) On Page13 of your manual it says there is a "Black Plastic Backing" on the keyboard that makes the keys lighter. Well, my gf spilled wine on the keyboard and now a few keys don't work and the rest of the keyboard light is dimmer. Could it possibly be that the Black Plastic Backing is damaged and if so, do you guys sell it? I'd appreciate ANY help, thanks again :)

Powerbook Medic 15 years ago	@Tim - it is fairly self-explanatory once you get the top case off. There are several screws on the underside of the keyboard. Remove those, disconnect the cable, and pull it out from the front.

Powerbook Medic 15 years ago	@Chris - Really the only way to test without opening up the machine is by tilting the display back and forth. If the lines get better or worse depending on the angle of the display, it is most likely the cable.

Chris T. 15 years ago	Is the inverter cable usually responsible for screen malfunction? My screen gets a thin blue vertical line going down the right hand side of it [about an inch and a half in from the right edge], and the image begins to dissolve. When I move the screen back and forth a little the image tightens up and sometimes the blue line goes away.
soso 15 years ago	A while back, I dropped my MBP and paid $650 to have the LCD screen and HD replaced. They said the SuperDrive was also bad, but I couldn't afford to get it done for another $200, so I opted out of that repair. I want to replace the SuperDrive myself now, but I'm worried that the slight bend in the bottom case is what is causing it to not work, rather than actual damage to the SuperDrive. When I pop in a disc, the drive whirs and spins, but then it spits the disc right back out (with some difficulty due to the slight angle in the case.) The drive did read a CD on two separate occasions, but I think it might have been because I was pressing on the case to flatten it out a bit. I haven't been able to get it to read a DVD.
pok 15 years ago	how about the more recent macbook pros with the non-removable batteries? The case is easy to open, but once opened, a notice says,"DO NOT REMOVE BATTERY", which makes access to the track pad impossible. I want to clean a coffee spill that stopped the click function of the trackpad.

dani t 15 years ago	My display backlight flickers off whenever I pull on the righthand side of the display. It is especially sensitive when my MBP is cold; sometimes I have to warm it up before I can get it to work. I have to put it to sleep and wake it up for the backlight to come on again. @ genius bar they told me it's probably the inverter cable, which is on the left hand side. Could it possibly be the video cable (right side) which is causing this problem? If that's a possibility, I'll probably just try replacing the video cable.

Val Tora (Rome, Italy) 15 years ago	Hi! I've used your videos as guide to upgrade my MacBook Pro HD from a 120Gb Hitachi to a 500Gb Hitachi. The info was superb, very detailed and clear. I had no problems whatsoever to open the MBP, change the HD and close the unit. Prior to opening the MacBook, I used SuperDuper to copy the original HD onto the new one (mounted in an external USB box), after the HD switch I just booted from the new HD inside the MBP and everything was operational without a hitch. Powerbook Medic 15 years ago	@Dani - Try to repair permissions with Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If that doesn't help, scan the hard drive for errors. It should give you more information on possible hard drive problems or corrupt operating system issues.

Frank 15 years ago	Fellas, I'm trying to use Skype and the microphone wont work so they can't hear me but i can hear them, and then when i switch the microphone from built in internal microphone to built in input line in and then i cannot hear them but they can hear me! it seems that both speakers and microphone work is just some interference happen between them when i switch. for now I am using my i-phone headphones with mic but i was wondering if you could help me with this please with any advise. cheers
Powerbook Medic 15 years ago	@Gary - The LCD includes the backlight. Replacing just the backlight itself is a complicated procedure we don't recommend.
