Hi,
for iMac 8.1 model A1224 with defect ODD.
Is it really necessary to remove the logic board in order to replace the Optical Disk Drive, please?
Or can i just replace that peace right away after removing the display.
Thanks in advance,
Kind regards,
Donat Merlevede

@Joe - we do not, unfortunately. it is fairly tricky so we just sell the stand still attached to the rear housing.

Do you all have instructions that detail removal of the stand? In other models, there appears to be a latch button that you use a plastic card to remove, but I can not feel the latch in the 20" model. Thanks!

@Jose - it might be best to take it somewhere to be diagnosed. It'd be a headache to figure it out testing one part at a time.

@Rush - there's a hinge inside that you have to disassemble to get the stand off. It's not much fun which is why never really sell the stand separately from the main casing.

How the heck do you remove the aluminum stand on the 20" iMac A1224 model - moving from Japan to states and I need to remove it for shipping -
Powerbook Medic

@TheDude - not necessarily. This is a guide to completely disassemble it. If you see a shortcut just to get to the part you need, you are welcome to do that.

Do you need to follow these steps in sequential order to replace the Hard Drive? IE - in order to get to the hard drive, do you need to remove everything else in this video first?

@Emmanuel - this isn't really the place for doing a complete troubleshoot. You may want to speak to one of our techs through the Send-in Mac Repair section of our site about what they think it may be or if you should send it in for diagnosis.

@TFAITH - the number of beeps helps determine what error you are getting. i.e. 3 beeps is typically a memory chip issue.

My friend tried updating her imac 20 it was purchased in 2008, she can't find the start up disk that came with it. now it has a black screen and it beeps...I never worked on Apple products but eager to learn. I've repaired laptops and desktops...so I'm a little tech savvy ... just need help on imac 20. It would be an accomplishment if I can get her IMAC 20 working again. Thanks in advance

Is there any way to test the power supply itself?
Powerbook Medic

@Jhonatan - you may want to try booting from your restore disk and checking for disk errors and possibly reinstalling the OS.

i had to create a partition and then it let me format the disk. Thanks for everything. Great to have our iMac working after a year.

@Jujuomad - that typically means the drive is not formatted yet. You should be able to go to the menu at the top and format it using disk utility in the tools menu.

Ok I put my external DVD Burner and loaded the disc 1 installer that way but once I get into the installation process it asks fir a destination for Mac OS X software but there's nothing to select? Any help there?
Powerbook Medic

@Jujuomad - if you have the correct install discs it should let you boot up from the cd by holding down C or Option, then you can format it using disk utility.

once you put a new hard drive how do you get the iMac to accept the new hard drive, or format it. I've tried the install discs but it just shoots it out after a little while. Power on and there's a glider with a ? On it. Where do I go from there?

@Mike - you can reset the pmu by having it unplugged and hold down the power button for 10 seconds or so. @WIIM - No this is a complete takeapart video, you can switch out the drive whenever you get to a point you can take it out.

I managed to change the hard drive by starting with an ol' fashioned red rubber toilet plunger to take off the protective lens. The handle came in handy to hold up the side of the lcd without taking off all the other cables except the temp monitor and the display cable that has the two screws. Thanks!

Is it really necessary to peel all the components just to change the hard drive at the last step?(!!)

thank you very much for the nice clear video.
just to add: the screws you mention for the Casing, the LCD, etc. are not T8, but T9. (on my model A1124 iMac). a T8 screwdriver will probably work for screws that are not in too tight- but they'll slip out if they are- and they can slip if you are trying to tighten them firmly as well.
side note: Transistors don't store an electrical charge- but capacitors do!

I removed the LCD, but when I put it back, I can't remember which cable goes where with the 4 cables on the side of the LCD. There are 2 light blue wires on either side. Does it matter which I plug them into?

Will Powerbook Medic be developing an instructional video for the 24" iMac Core 2 Duo or will the iMac 20" Core 2 Duo video instructions that is available for download apply to the 24" as well?

@Grotty -You can go straight to the hard drive after removing the LCD. You can use magnetized screwdrivers, though technical recommendations go against that...to be safe use a non magnetized one.
Grotty

Oh I forgot. The screwdriver bits you use. Are they magnetic? I have no idea wether or not that can hurt the electronics.

Great video! I'm about to check the cables connected to the hard drive on my 24" iMac. I'm a first timer.
Stupid question: I don't have to remove all that stuff just to check the hard drive right? I can go straight to the hard drive and check the cables after removing the lcd?

@ MLN1963 - The procedure is extremely similar but not identical.
