Hi, I bought a 1 GHZ 17" PowerBook for $20 and it does not have RAM..I powered up the laptop and there is no video display. Does the laptop need RAM in order to display video, or is it a video card issue. I am planning on buying it from this website but don't want to spend the money on RAM if the problem doesn't have to do with RAM. Thanks

I'm trying to find where the Hall sensor (lid close sleep sensor) is on the A1139 (DLSD/Hi-Res 17" PowerBook G4). The magnet is along the top edge of the display a couple of inches from the left edge, but I don't see anything in the case indicating the board. Any idea where it is? Thanks.

@nosound - if it lets you adjust the volume, it may just be a speaker issue. You may want to go inside and reseat the connections. Otherwise, I'd start by replacing the sound board.

I am looking at you video on sound repair because i have none on my 17" g4. I went into setting and adjusted the sound but still no sound. I am not certain whether it is the card or the assembly, how can i determine this?

@Luis - the small little nub is only available on new keyboards. if you still have it you can glue it back in place as a temporary fix, otherwise you'll need to buy a replacement keyboard.

A piece of the charger (i beleive) had broken off inside my DC in port. I purchased a new charger, no charge, I replaced the DC IN board, still not charging, any ideas?

@Suherman - you shouldn't have an issue installing Tiger (10.4). The minimum requirements are quite low. Leopard (10.5) is much harder to run on this machine.

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 which I love but it is getting old and recently my screen seems to flicker when I first boot. It seems to stop after the computer warms up. I hooked it up to an external monitor and flicker does not happen on external monitor. Is this possibly a LCD screen getting ready to burn out? If so, do you have a replacement. 82 months old. @Mark - we have several shipping methods starting at free to overnight service. You can see the options on the Schedule a Repair page through the Send-in Mac Repair link at the top.

Mark

how much is it to ship to you guys?

Powerbook Medic

@Mark - as long as its a 65w adapter it should turn on even without a battery installed. It is most likely a logic board issue at this point. I would have it professionally diagnosed.

Hello :) I wanted to ask how essay is to replace the Back Case Rear Housing for 17" Powerbook G4 - M9970LL/A 17'' inch PowerBook.- is there a video showing this on your site? or a photo guide? or something? I want to replace just the case not the LCD screen.I noticed that on the LCD replace video the taking out of the back case is somehow complicated. Can I change the back case without removing the whole display / upper part from the PowerBook?

Rob

Does anyone know where I can find a bootable diag repair cd for this G4 17 Alu model?

Powerbook Medic

@Per - yea, removing the back case is very tricky on this model. Just make sure you are not including the trim with the back case. It is part of the bezel on this model and there are just tons of little clips all the way around that you have to carefully pop free as you work your way around.

Per

My fault.. some of the clips sit very differently from the others, for an untrained mac-eye. Aluminum is off! :)

Per

Removing the aluminum panel from the 17" lcd seems impossible. Got all the clips but is the thing superglued? thanks.

My 17" G4 no longer charges the batteries. Only functions when plugged into the wall. Anyone know if this is a big deal to repair? Thanks

Powerbook Medic

@Jorge - I would check if it is going completely black or if you can barely make out the image. Sometimes shining a flashlight through the apple in the back can help show this. If you can make out an image, that is going to be a backlight issue which could just mean something is adjusting your brightness all the way down or it could be an inverter board issue.

What a great video. Congratulations. I have an issue with my Powerbook g4. When I try to start it works well. The screen is bright and the screen for user password still is bright, but once I enter any user account the screen goes black. I connected my external 23" HD to check the source of the problem but the same problem happened. What could it be. Is there any way I can check it, before I open the PB. Thanks for your help. P.S.:) the battery is dead could that be it(it smells bad).

@Annie - you'll need to buy the pram board. you'll have to take off the top case and superdrive to replace it. for the external, you'll need a dual usb port cable to get enough power. for the trackpad, you'll need a new top case. for the spacebar, you can try popping it off and cleaning it but if its liquid damage you might have to replace the keyboard. for the video issues, some video compressions these days are too much for even your machine to handle because they don't use the video chip for decoding like your dvds can and rely on processor power. you can load up Activity Monitor from your Utilities folder and can look at the CPU Usage while playing videos to see if it gets maxed out.

Hi Guys & Gals :) Well I'm new to Mac's by about 2-3 months. I work on Pc's and know them inside out but Mac is a different story! I bought a powerbook G4 17", 1.67 processor, A1107, Low res' which I must say is a very very nice laptop but it has a couple of small things that need doing to it. *The first is the main battery needs replacing and tonight when I booted up the date came up which on any laptop is the Cmos/Pram battery. After checking out the Pram battery I'm wondering if I can buy just the battery or do I have to buy the complete assembly of the Pram/USB board?? The second question I have is can I get the USB/pram board out without having to pull the whole computer apart and if there is a video showing how to get it out??? *The next question I have is regarding to a 160GB external hard drive that is in a USB caddy... this laptop will not pick it up and the external drive just sits there making a clicking noise and yet the same USB hard drive works just fine on another old Mac (14"powerbook G3) but doesn't work on the other small 12" Ibook G3 either, Why is this???? * My second last question for you is.... The tracking pad on this one (17" powerbook A1107) is not working, which isn't a great drama but it would be nice to get it going again plus I notice since I've been typing this that the key doesn't always pick up on the use of the spacebar is it just me or could there an under lining problem for this....NOT that I want any more.. thanks! ;))) * My last Question is regarding watching videos over the net, they seem to be lagging and jumpy like there not enough power to play them?? and yet when I play a DVD it seems to play OK???? It's running 1GB of ram at the moment but I have ordered another 1GB to boost it up to a total of 2G. Any idea's on this would be great :)))) Anyway guys thanks you for any help you can give me on any of these problems and I'm looking forward to someday being able to help other out. :)))))) Many Thanks Annie :))

@Jeff - For #1, they no longer manufacture the original LCDs any more for the Powerbook 17". The only new LCDs you can get now are aftermarket which may have different screw holes. For #2, the magnet placement is very picky. If it is not close enough to activate the reed switch underneath the trackpad, sleep mode will not work. For #3, you may want to do a PRAM reset, after that if you bought the LCD from us, you may want to contact customer support.

Hi Guys. 1 comment and 2 Issues with a 17" PB G4 LCD replacement. 1) The replacement LCD does not contain the 6 screw holes in the actual display, only the ones on the sides. 2) although I replaced the magnet on the back of the LCD from the old display, it must be in the wrong location. I assume it needs react with the trackpad when closed, since this is approximately the location of it on the old display. As a result, I don't have sleep mode when i close the cover. 3) It seems i have lost both contrast brightness controls/ Contrast simply does nothing, brightness controls bring up the icons on screen but show a small circle with a line through it, indicating I am not allowed to do that. What might I have missed during the replacement process related to contrast and brightness functionality? All other keys on the keyboard work correctly. Many thanks

Jeff

Sorry, I misstated. Not contrast, I meant the keyboard backlight which had a disallowed icon. Now magically it works. Backlight brightness controls still does not function. Any idea?

@Burt - Make sure the locking mechanism is underneath the cable. The cable should go in between the top of the connector and the sliding locking mechanism.

Having trouble putting the gray keyboard cable back into its socket. Problem is - I can't snap shut the tiny latches on either side of the cable. (The latches move up to release the cable. They will move down - as long as the cable is not inserted. Is it possible the cable is not inserted far enough?

@Sterling - in the rare case it may be the display cable, but most of the time it is the LCD.

I agree with Elle, definitely more hassle putting it back together than the entire hard drive replacement. Wish the video also went through putting the laptop back together.
